Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association Law Clerk Position
The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota is seeking a law clerk out of its Saint Paul, Minnesota office (currently all staff are working remotely). The law clerk will be an integral part of our Community Defense team. Second language fluency in Spanish is preferred
Organization Summary: The mission of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota is to enhance opportunities for immigrants and refugees through legal representation for low income individuals, and through education and advocacy with diverse communities. Our goals are to:
• Remedy legal problems by providing quality immigration legal services to low income immigrants and refugees of all nationalities; and
• Prevent legal problems by providing law-related education to immigrants and refugees of all nationalities;
• Raise public awareness of immigration issues to encourage sound public policy that protects the universal human rights of immigrants and is both compassionate and practical.
The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) is a 33-person office with five locations in the State of Minnesota including two Saint Paul offices and offices in Moorhead, Worthington, and Austin. ILCM has been in operation for almost 25 years, and is funded through individual, law firm, corporate, United Way, foundation, and local, state, and federal government support.

Schedule and Hours: School year clerkship (beginning Fall 2020) – Between 5 and 15 hours a week .
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The law clerk will support ILCM’s Community Defense Project, which serves both detained and non-detained clients in removal proceedings. Their primary responsibilities will include documentation gathering and legal research to assist attorneys in our office defending refugees and immigrants from deportation. The law clerk would assist attorneys in preparing defenses to deportation for our clients, including: client correspondence, intake, drafting bond motions and briefs in support of release, and gathering supplemental documentation and evidence for cases. The law clerk will also conduct intake for clients in immigration detention in Minnesota and work with the attorneys on our team to secure their release from detention. In addition, the law
clerk would attend Immigration Court hearings (in person or remotely) for cases on which she or he provided assistance as well as other matters with client consent.
Preferred Skills/Experience Include:
• Current law student.
• Second-language ability in Spanish highly preferred.
• Prior experience in immigration matters preferred.
• Familiarity with the Latinx immigrant community.
• Commitment to working with low-income communities.
• Good communication, organizational, research, writing, and public speaking skills.
• Individuals of Latinx ethnic or cultural background encouraged to apply.
Terms of internship: The position is for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 academic semesters, 5-15 hours per week.
